Supply

There’s a lot of corn produced worldwide. In fact, the number is 1.172 BMT. Here in the United States, we’re proud to be the number one producer. China makes roughly 274 MMT, while the US produces 354 MMT. Brazil is in third place with 126MMT, followed by the European Union and Argentina. 

The crop is harvested between September and November after being planted in April in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s planted around September. In Brazil, the “Safrinha” crop is a popular one planted between December and March as the weather improves. It can usually be harvested in May or June.

Demand

In the United States, we’re also the largest consumer of corn. Experts estimate we consume roughly 304.8 MMT out of a total demand of 1,180 MMT. China and the European Union are the second and third largest consumers. 

Ending stocks

Ending stocks of this commodity are significant, with China holding an estimated 207 MMT out of the world’s total estimated 304.5 MMT. In comparison, the US only has an estimated 30.9 MMT ending stock.
