Did you ever wonder where saltbox houses got their name from? It is a traditional, Colonial-style that came out of New England. When it is seen from the front, the roof looks symmetrical. If seen from the side, it becomes clear that the roof slopes so that the front has 2 stories. The back of the house looks like the house only has one.
The house has some recognizable features, including a flat front. The shape of the roof and the way the floors are built is the most easily recognizable. They got their name from the saltbox they resemble. They were used when the style started popping up around 1650.
The design started appearing since people chose to extend the side of the roof on one side. It would make for a relatively cheap way to increase the home’s square footage. As families grew in size, the saltbox could be modified.
More space was added as families often had many children. Today, the style is still being built and has improved since its original concept.
